The prime objective of the Directorate of Archaeology Assam is declaration of Archaeological sites and monuments of Assam as notified and protected monument, under the “The Assam Ancient Monument and Records Act, 1959” and “The Assam Ancient Monument and Records Rules 1964” for future preservation and maintenance of the sites/ monuments by the Directorate. After the exploration and identification of a monument/site by the Technical Officer/ Exploration Officer of the Directorate an exploration report has to be submitted to the higher authority following which the Proforma for protection declaration is filled up by the Directorate and submitted to the District administration seeking for revenue clearance  and the necessary particulars such as measurement of land of the Sites and Monuments  including patta no, dag no, name of location, mouza etc, report of the circle officer and the views of the Deputy Commissioner in Part-II of the format of Assessment of Sites and Monuments suggested for protection. 

              After the clearance of the Deputy Commissioner the format has to be assessed by the respective Secretariat administration for approval of the Commissioner/Secretary to the Government of Assam to notify the proposed site (at part I) under “The Assam Ancient Monument and Records Act, 1959” and “The Assam Ancient Monument and Records Rules 1964” and the Ancient Monument and Archaeological Sites and Remains (Amendment and Validation)Act, 2010 and the Assam Ancient Monuments and Records Act, 1959 and the Assam Ancient Monuments and Records Rule, 1964. After systematic scrutiny of the administrative department it is submitted to the legislative assembly seeking gazette notification as state protection archaeological site. A sample of the format and notification has been attached for proper understanding.
