Excavation of Archaeological Sites

The Archaeological excavation is carried out to reveal hidden ancient structure and antiquities (artifacts and ecofacts) which was concealed by later deposits. It is different from normal earth cutting or digging for which specialized and trained person is required. The process involve removal of the superimposed layers one after another in reverse order to the way they were laid down, gradually revealing each successive cultural stages in the history of the site. It should be conducted methodically and meticulously. So that whatever is found can be seen and studied within its own content. It is necessary to maintain a careful record in order to understand the contextual and stratigraphical position of objects and architectural features.
